Nathan & Penny
Your crew aboard Alegria is Captain Nathan and First Mate/Chef Penny from Australia.
Growing up in sunny Queensland, Nathan has lived near the beach and been on or around the water most of his life. He’s into anything that gets him either on or out of a boat, whether it be scuba diving, fishing, surfing or sailing. He loves it all. Having a variety of work experiences in his background, Nathan has worked in various roles in the hospitality and marine industries, ranging from crewing on super yachts, activities attendant and water-sports facilitator on 5 star island resorts through to commercial fishing, to name a few.
Penny grew up on the little island state of Tasmania but spent most of her adult life in Melbourne. She is a Registered Nurse who has worked predominantly in the corporate health sector. Penny loves cooking, scuba diving, fishing and traveling. Sitting down to enjoy a fine meal created by Penny is just an incredible and wonderful treat.
Nathan and Penny met while working at remote Lizard Island Resort in far north Queensland on the Great Barrier Reef. Nathan as a dive instructor and the skipper of a sport fishing charter vessel in one of the world’s best Black Marlin fishing grounds. Penny was the coordinator of the Marine and Dive Department. There they also had their own small power boat to get out on the reef in their free time and do some diving, fishing and exploring of the remote outer Barrier Reef islands.
This warm and charming couple have cruised extensively in the Caribbean British Virgin Islands as well as around St Martin, St Barths and Anguilla. They will be treating their guests to unforgettable relaxing, luxurious dive and fishing adventures. They look forward to seeing you onboard!See reviews

Everything about our week was beyond all expectations!
As a group we were beyond happy with the crew. What a team! Great at what they do. Fun loving, friendly, went above and beyond to make our trip all it could be and more. Nathan's dry humor was so enjoyable. Great job of daily cleaning and temperature control. Upper deck was wonderful. Water toys great.
Penny is a tremendous cook and did a great job with our preferences. Rave reviews for quality, imagination and presentation. It's obvious she loves cooking.
Nathan was very accomplished in showing us areas we wanted to visit.
Two hundred per cent better than our previous mono hull sailing charter!
Mat S, aboard Catamaran Amara sailing the British Virgin Islands
Nathan and Penny were perfect! We knew they would be great, but they exceeded our greatest expectations.
Amara was perfect! It is very spacious, with 3 completely different living areas: the bow, the fly bridge, and the stern. PLENTY of space to get away from the crowd if needed, but also plenty of space in each area for the whole group to hang out together
We are a five star meal three meals a day every day! The food definitely exceeded expectations. We had one gluten free, one dairy free, one both, and the other 5 with no specific dietary needs. And all 8 had one of the best meals we've ever had every single meal!
The itinerary was perfect (and seemed to be tailor made for us), and even when the weather or waves made Nathan change his plans the day was still perfect.
Sailing Directions did a great job of organizing our trip.
Everything was perfect! Definitely the best vacation ever!
Randy G, aboard Catamaran Amara sailing the British Virgin Islands
Yes, the boat was fantastic! It was better than we could have imagined. Amara could very comfortably accommodate 10 guests without people feeling like they are on top of one another. Plenty of space to stretch out during the day. The flybridge was amazing and huge, and easily accommodated our whole group. The cabins were spacious, and the beds and bathrooms large compared to other boats. We really didn't need to use the salon interior of the boat, with all the fantastic room outside. The dinner table was quite spacious as well.
The crew was wonderful. Nathan and Penny are both laid back and friendly, but very professional. Nathan has a very dry sense of humor, and had us laughing a lot. They definitely catered to our preferences and desires. Nathan made sure the water toys were in the water and available each day (kayak, paddleboard, etc) even without us asking. The food was outstanding, with both the quality and presentation at the level of fine dining. Penny would watch what we ate and listen to us talk, and surprise us with unplanned items - such as hearing some talk about ceviche on a recent vacation, she pulled some scallops from another meal to make ceviche as an appetizer one night. The ability to scuba right from the boat was a plus for the divers, rather than a rendezvous dive. The areas that they dove were ones that the other guests could snorkel at, so everyone had something to do and no one was waiting around for others to complete an activity. It was also neat to snorkel over the others diving. Two of us did the resort course with Nathan, and I did my first dive. This was something I probably would not have done if it had not been immediately available. It was fantastic, and Nathan was very patient. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
After traveling there [to BVI] twice now, I certainly don't feel like I am an expert about the BVI at all, but we have experienced quite a bit. We did lots of things this trip that we did not do last trip, and we duplicated several things as well. We continue to love Anegada, and instead of renting a car like last time, we rented scooters this time to get to Cow Wreck, which was fun. One of the loveliest beaches in our estimation. We enjoyed Prickly Pear, having a beach almost to ourselves to toss a Frisbee and relax. I don't know that I can list all of the places that I really enjoyed or would love to return to. The list would be too long. The BVI provides a wonderful array of activities for everyone. We combed beaches, hiked and explored, sat at little beach bars, snorkeled, scuba dived, fished, and kayaked, all in 1 day! Not many places that you can travel for a week and have such a variety of activities at your fingertips.
Thanks again! We had a fantastic vacation!
Huge thanks for a spectacular week aboard AMARA!
We have loved every second, but here are highlights:
Nathan calling for meals with the conch shell,
Hanging out on the bean bags on the fly deck,
The Bubbly Pool on Jost Van Dyke,
Nathans endless creativity with alcoholic drinks Captains Corner
Your Reindeer ears and Reindeer fun on Christmas morning
and the AMAZING meals and treats coming out of Pennys kitchen!
Our Favs have been the steak and bread pudding on our very first night,
The meat pie and slaw, the truly magnificent xmas eve meringue and strawberry surprise.
The bacon wrapped dates,
The taco salad and the keylime pie!
And most of all it has been so much fun just being with you two
From Nathans deadpan humor to Pennys neverending smile, you are a joy to know!
We look forward to doing this again in the not too distant future!
Dear Nathan and Penny,
Thank you for an unforgettable cruise!
We all had such an incredible time floating around the BVIs. Whether it was diving, getting massages, or just lazing
Around the Amara (my personal favorite), every day was wonderful. And the food.
My dad may have been over the top in his delivery, but the praise was certinaly merited! Every single
Dish was amazing. We cant wait to see you guys again on the next one (or in Chicago)!
Nathan and Penny,
There is no way to express how we feel about this incredible week.
Of course, we can say chapter and verse about Amara and all the wonderful
things if involved, but I will leave that to others. The real key to this trip was you two! It is not possible to have found two more terrific people to spend time with! You made our time with you seamlessly happy & enjoyable. Youve both got great skills, but together you are unmatched (really untouchable).
Suffice it to say that youve got a lock [in] on having and giving happiness!
We really hope to see you on Nantucket!
More than Warmly,
Love from the family B.
This was a vacation of a lifetime. Incredible space, beautiful waters, heavenly company altogether magical. You two are a great team xoxo
Oh and from L. H and W : Never a dull moment. We had so much fun on this trip, it tops any other! We really hope we can come back soon the food was amazing and so was the boat in general. Thanks for everything!

Watching my family scuba together for the first time was more meaningful than I can adequately express.
WE formed a bond with you both , and we anxiously await the next time we are able to charter with you, hopefully in Dominica! We wish you the best of luck, health and a life of love and happiness together. Your dear friends, Family Simon
Our travels had us all in such a tail spin both coming and going. All self employed and with the Thanksgiving holiday at our feet when we returned....
From finding [broker] to deciding on the boat she could not have been more patient nor helpful, and believe me, I had alot of questions and expectations to be meet. We had traveled to the bvi once before and had an old well kept boat with a captain that could never be replaced we all cried when we said goodbye including the captain. That was in 2007. The things we wanted to change this time was a newer boat and we wanted a chef onboard. The old captain no longer active had us all looking for what we thought was next to impossible to find; a crew that could live up to some very high expectations.
OMG WOW ........ The Alegria was soooooo beautiful, clean , Spacious , easy for all of us to get around , bedrooms like a motor yahct , and then the captain Nathan who moved that boat around like it was his own two feet and was always ready for WHATEVER great humor always helpful knew the bvi like his own home and full of suprises, Then theres Penny. OK so just a little history here. My daughter had the opportunity to be a guest on a [mega] motor yacht 2 years ago, a 150 feet private yacht vacation. Something we will never have the money to do, yes at $40,000 PER person yayaya. The first thing she said was that Pennys cooking is far superior. All I can say is if you are lucky enough to catch this boat with this crew. DO IT. Your imagination cant even go there. I hope we get the chance to do it again asap, before they are too famous.
Truly Yours, Comptons et Co
[where do I start...] we loved the fresh baking every day - Penny is an extraordinary cook ! - and everyone looked forward to the meals. We had a very active group , so everyone had a great appetite !
Nathan blowing the conch for meals was a funny, sweet touch... He is a great guy !
And the guys loved the fishing every day - we actually got a large mackerel, which Nathan quickly filetted and it was served at dinner that night with a lovely lemony sauce...
Friends have asked us how we could co-exist with the whole family - and a baby ! - on a boat for A WEEK.
Answer : The Alegria is very well laid out - so many platforms and seats , up and down, front and back that it was easy to be by yourself to read or tan, it never felt crowded...
We all love cooking, and we have nothing but praise for the food : The table was laid differently for each meal - different color placemats for lunch and different table cloths every night... The food was presented very attractively, and plentiful. One of my favorites were the tacos shaped like a bowl, filled with the meat mixture... The baby got a mini-one !
One recommendation for the table : Get the battery operated candles ( William Sonoma ) that would have given an even nicer glow to the dinner table...
The crew followed the preference sheet - and more .
Nathan was always concerned for our safety, and went snorkelling with my husband. And although we know the BVI very well, having visited since 1971, the Captain surprised us with lovely, pristine and solitary anchorages we had never seen, every day...
We would love to sail with the Alegria [now onboard new yacht AMARA] again !
