Steve Van Wig
Captain Steve Van Wig grew up sailing and racing small sailboats and surfing the southern California waters. He delivered race boats as crew on deliveries and has crewed and raced off California, Mexico and Hawaii. Discovering windsurfing at 17 was followed by 25 years of passionately chasing windsurfing all over California, Baja Mexico, Maui and Oregon. Steve has owned boats most of his life, including beach cats, ski boats and pocket cruisers. Since 2007 he has been sailing, cruising and living aboard a Whitby 42ft ketch that Janet and he rebuilt from the keel up. He has been chartering for the last few years in the BVis in winter and the Grenadines for summer. Sailing seasonally between these two destinations allows them to enjoy and explore the Caribbean island chain twice a year as they move the boat back & forth.
After spending 15 years in the restaurant industry, Steve opened and ran 2 successful businesses while living in the Colombia River Gorge, Oregon for 19 years, one a furniture outlet and the other a fiberglass shop involved with the windsurfing industry. Steve enjoys meeting new people and showing them the joys of seeing things from the water side of life. He loves to cook and is always in the galley whipping up delicious snacks and healthy and hearty meals that his past charter guests rave about. No one goes hungry with Steve in the galley. Steve and Janet's love of sailing and years of experience sailing equates to safe and fun boat handling. You might find either one at the helm while the other is inside whipping up something yummy to eat or drink...read more
Steve currently holds a USCG100 Ton USCG Masters license. In addition to a STCW marine safety, fire and first aid rating. He also holds a USCG Sailing and towing endorsements. Steve is a kite surfing instructor and pretty much a fanatic about chasing lobsters.
Janet was born in Holland and grew up in a family passionate about sailing, camping in Portugal and food. Since her father was a merchant marine seaman, as well as a competitive racer with his own cruiser / racer, it was only a matter of time before she was following in his foot path. She went from dingy sailing as a kid to Hobie-Cat racing in the North Sea to more recently delivering new cruising yachts in Europe and across the Atlantic. As an active member of the sailing club in Holland on the North Sea at Noordwyk, she was also very involved in organizing national regattas and social activities while remaining active as racing crew. She competed in the Hobie cat European nationals and went to Greece to compete in the worlds.
Her love for sailing and kitesurfing led her travel to a good chunk of Europe, South America and the States where she met Steve while on a kitesurfing vacation to the world-famous windsurfing and kitesurfing destination called the Gorge in Oregon. The adventures continued, traveling to brazil for 4 months of camping on the northern beaches... they bought a dune buggy and drove on the beach to a new spot to kite every day. After that adventure they fixed up a cruising boat in Florida in 2007 and started living aboard. Starting in 2013 they set out to explore the Caribbean Sea to enjoy the culture there while living on their boat, cruising, exploring and working term charters in the Caribbean Islands (Virgin Islands in the winter and the Grenadines in the summer.
Janet's love for cooking and creating good healthy food started at her parent's knees, as they are both great cooks and loved to entertain and cook for family and friends. Her use of spices and fun flavors and creative sauces comes from her traveling and experiencing the different unique cousine each country had to offer. She enjoys making healthy, yet decadent deserts. Ok, and for the captain a few that are not as healthy. But, still decadent. The devil's chocolate rum cake, and dark chocolate coconut haystacks are favorites... Yes, we both love dark Chocolate.
Janet is but a 4-day practical test away from her dream of getting her RYA offshore captains license, so do not be surprised if she is driving the boat while your Captain is inside baking or whipping up some treat for you, learned from his long years in the restaurant industry.
Janet's passions/hobbies are Swimming, Kitesurfing, Snorkeling, Stand up paddling (on the stand up she has a funny trend of taking off and coming back 4 or 5 hours later having decided in route to paddle around the nearest small island) and Cooking... not necessarily in that order ;>)
Janet's goal is to give everybody an unforgettable vacation. She is sweet and kind and just wants to make sure to show you the most beautiful places in the Virgin Islands. Is it the out of the way quiet anchorage with swimming pool bottoms or the amazing snorkeling? Scuba diving? Or the bar hopping on the whitest, busiest beaches? Chef Janet and Captain Steve plan to make it happen for you. Come join us in Paradise. We will always show you our favorite spots here.

it was a wonderful experience for us sailing with Steven and Janet - the boat, the crew, the sailing spots, the food and drinks, their hospitality during the entire week - everything was done to perfection. In a nutshell: a memorable and fantastic experience! Thank you.
From Santa Barbara, CA March 2016
Steve and Janet went above and beyond to make our sailing adventure so wonderful. We had the best time surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving and, of course, sailing! It was the perfect combination of excitement and relaxation. Steve and Janet know just where to go and all the sweetest spots. The food was amazing! It is actually hard to eat well in the BVIs, and they really heard my request for lots of veggies and other special requests, and came up with excellent food from scratch every meal. We felt so taken care of, so comfortable and at ease, and enjoyed the company of this awesome couple so much. These two really love what they do, and it makes for a unique and unforgettable adventure on many levels. Highly recommended ! :)

We arrived to a beautiful boat and welcoming crew. Captain Steve and Admiral Janet spared no expense, time, and effort in making sure we had a memorable 25th wedding anniversary trip to include a surprise bottle of champagne on the night of our anniversary. They knew the best bays to get out of the rolling waves, the best snorkeling, and quietest beaches. These two really, truly went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable, enjoyable, and memorable. You know it's a good time when you walk away from a trip with insider jokes with the hosts and trip sayings and whatnot. We had a ball and laughed our asses off. We will definitely be doing this again.
From Corsicana, TX December 2015
We had a great trip. Excellent Hosts very realistic descriptions up front. Both Steve and Janet are accomplished sailors and hosts. Great knowledge of the BVI's, off the beaten path moorings and sights. Willing to accommodate what you'd like to do on your vacation. I'd highly recommend your getaway with Steve and Janet.

My husband and I had the pleasure of being with Steve and Janet on the boat for a week. Steve was a wonderful sailor who took us to exotic places. Their culinary skills were superb. I can't say enough about this memorable trip!!!!! It was great!
As for the food, I will say that you are in for a treat. We were thinking that with limited space and eating at anchor most of our trip, we would be lacking in choice and diversity not so! Their experience in the kitchen and their ability to create a varied, tasty and fresh meal each night was a welcomed surprise. Homemade hummus, salsa and spaghetti sauce were simply amazing! Breakfast sandwiches and hot coffee every morning was a great way to start our day. In short, we all had a great time and loved our experience. If you are looking for a bit of adventure, a trustworthy captain who quickly becomes a friend, then you will have a great time. Our group would return for sure and the BVIs is a magical place with people that seem to find the way life should be attitude and ease of each day.

Captain Steve and his wife Janet are an amazing couple that made it feel like sailing with old friends rather than hosts. We found Captain Steve while searching for sailing charters in the USVI. However, after reading that Steve and Janet were in Grenada for the hurricane season, and on the advice of a few friends, we changed our travel plans and met them on the boat in St. Vincent. We spent eight nights traveling through the St. Vincent and Grenadian Grenadines, which are stunning. While we were nervous booking during hurricane season, we could not have been happier with our choice. As many of the locals told us, hurricane season is the best time to visit the lower Caribbean Islands as they are way less likely to get hit with big storms vs. the northern islands. We had almost every anchorage to ourselves including the Tobago Cays, which Steve said was unheard of.
My girlfriend very much enjoyed the Stand Up Paddleboards for Yoga. Steve and Janet went out of their way to make sure we had anything that we wanted, including provisioning the boat all the foods that we preferred. The meals and snacks throughout the day were fantastic and we loved all the dinner conversation. Steve communicated extremely well prior to our departure and answered all of our questions. He was incredibly helpful when it came to working through the itinerary, which changed almost daily after we arrived. Steve even allowed us to book an extra evening to accommodate the itinerary we wanted after we arrived (You won't want to leave either).
The Grenadines are extremely beautiful and the Tobago Cays were one of the best places we visited during our two month vacation in the Caribbean. As Steve said, you don't arrive as a sailor until you have arrived at the Tobago Cays. Steve knew all the best anchorage spots and made the sailing a great time. Overall, sailing with Steve and Janet was the best week of our two month Caribbean adventure. We would definitely book again and if you are even thinking of chartering a boat, you should definitely reach out to Steve. We can't thank him and Janet enough for the amazing week at sea.
We just got back from seven nights in the Virgin Islands and cannot say enough about how incredible of an experience it was. One of the best weeks of our lives. Steve and Janet took care of our every need, and helped us map out an itinerary that allowed us to see and do everything we had wanted to in the BVI. Their experience in the kitchen was evident in the delicious meals they served throughout each day. They load the boat up with whatever you tell them you like ahead of time and then over the next week you sit back and relax while they serve restaurant-quality dishes for every meal. The boat itself is in great shape and always spotless, and Steves rolodex of gorgeous beaches and calm anchorages made for incredible beach days and easy sleeping at night. Overall, Steven and Janet blew our already-high expectations out of the water (no pun intended) and we will be booking again very soon. Perfect week!
From Chicago January 2014
As far as choosing a totally perfect, zero-stress, engaging, and most of all FUN return to BVI, this hit the mark completely. Steve and Janet are both excellent hosts, made sure we wanted for nothing, and that we had total control over our itinerary. We will certainly be booking with them again in the near future, particularly because of their willingness to cater to us as professional photographers. HIGHLY recommended for any photogs looking to change their perspective on the islands and looking to shoot from the water in. From picking specific routes for the best shots, to making sure we had smooth anchorages for the early morning sunrise shoots, Steve and Janet were not only accommodating, but also interested in making sure we had the exact angles, amount of time, and plenty of opportunities to make incredible images.
We miss the boat, we miss the food (OMG chicken and salsa lettuce wraps) but most of all we miss Steve and Janet. Warm, inviting, and consummate sailing professionals. As our first chartered boating experience, we cannot recommend them highly enough. The vessel itself is amazing and clearly a labor of ongoing love. Comfortable, spotlessly clean, and restful- everything one would ever look for in a destination or lodging experience. You will be hard-pressed to find a more perfect BVI adventure at a more affordable price. "First-rate" doesn't do the vessel or the hosts justice....... Just book it and relax!
From Houston, TX August 2016
Our week in the BVIs was perfect as it provided for an amazing, unique and relaxed vacation. Steve and Janet are absolutely wonderful hosts who go above and beyond to meet all expectations. Steve was extremely responsive to all messages prior to the trip. We were immediately met with the warmest hospitality that was consistent throughout the trip. The food was superb, and Steve & Janet were willing and able to accommodate any dietary preferences. We came into the trip with minimal expectations for sites, and Steve immediately planned a wonderful trip that allowed us to relax and see the most beautiful beaches and bays that the BVI has to offer. Per his guidance, we snorkeled, paddle boarded and explored among the breathtaking scenery. We absolutely loved our week to "unplug" and completely relax while learning and experiencing the intricacies of sailing life. Hopefully we'll be able to be "lunatics" again in the near future!
