Meet the Crew

Matt & Kendra

Captain Matt and Chef/Mate Kendra welcome you to join them on Knot Anchored for fun, laughter, relaxation and amazing memories. From the moment you set foot on board Knot Anchored you will realize you are in for an experience no resort stay could ever match. Whether you are looking for secluded, secret bays or popular hot spots, Matt and Kendra know all the great places to go.

Your Captain:

Captain Matt grew up boating on the lakes, rivers and coastlines of Texas. Originally from a small town outside Austin, he has lived and travelled to many places throughout the world. Some of his many pastimes include playing the guitar, reading, hiking, fishing, spear fishing, diving, water skiing, snow skiing, mountain biking and, of course, sailing.

Matt sailed recreationally throughout his college, it wasn't until later in life that he decided to get his captains license and make a career of doing what he loves. After a more conventional career working as an Environmental Consultant and rehabilitating Craftsman bungalow houses, in 2008 Matt decided to follow his dream to buy a live-aboard sailboat, Helms Deep, and set sail.

Your Chef/Mate:

After graduating from Texas A&M University and before meeting Matt, Kendra also tried the land life, teaching middle school science and working as a Registered Nurse. Her interests include scuba diving, snorkeling, reading, kayaking, camping, and hiking...read more

Kendra grew up in a family who loves to cook, and she continually expanded her experience cooking meals and desserts and entertaining friends and family. During her time sailing the islands, she has continued to refine her culinary skills. Kendra focuses on combining dishes from her Mexican- and German-influenced Texas hometown and infusing flavors of the islands. She loves to tailor her menus to her guests tastes; whether focusing on a specialty diet, or using local ingredients to make each meal a memorable waterfront dining experience impossible to recreate in a conventional restaurant.

Matt and Kendra have been together for over 10 years. Since that day in 2010, when they decided to leave it all behind, Kendra and Matt have had many adventures on the open seas traveling the Gulf of Mexico, Florida, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, and up and down the Caribbean chain as far as Grenada. Kendra tells some pretty entertaining stories of their misadventures.

For the past three years Matt has been running private charters in the US and British Virgin Islands on a variety of sail and powerboats and Kendra has split her time between nursing and crewing on a variety of different boats.

Matt and Kendra can make sure you don't miss the unforgettable spots in the Virgin Islands, along with the hidden gems not easily found by the average visitor. They are both Coast Guard licensed Master Sailing Captains with international STCW certifications and First Aid/CPR. In addition, Matt has a 100-ton BVI Boatmaster license, has training in Crowd and Crisis Management, and is a Vessel Security Officer. Whether you are a dive master or a water sports novice, you will find your time on Knot Anchored enjoyable. Knowledgeable, fun, and safe, we believe the old adage the crew is 50% of the charter - your experience with Kendra and Matt will have you wanting to book your next trip on Knot Anchored before you disembark.

Kendra and Matt appreciate that time on the yacht can be about relaxing with a good book on the deck lounge with a mimosa, watching dolphins play in the bow wake of the yacht underway, frying up the fish you caught yourself, or packing your day with watersports under the Caribbean sun.

However you choose to spend your time on Knot Anchored, you will find Kendra and Matt's experience and joie de vivre ensure you have memories that last a lifetime.

The Crew Made This Trip!
From the moment we saw Knot Anchored pull into Red Hook, we knew it was going to be awesome! Captain Matt arrived smiling and giving us 2 thumbs up before we even came onboard. Matt had many other duties when not sailing us around. Great bartender! Our glasses were always full of wine, fruity boat drinks and plenty of Painkillers!!! The music selection was perfect and we learned Matt’s other talent, guitar. He played and turned over his guitar to one in our group who played. Such an intimate touch. We had many sing-alongs and dance parties.

Chef Kendra greeted us in a photo bomb, so we knew she was going to be fun! She made the most incredible meals! It was exciting to learn what we would be having and chose not to know ahead of time, since we like surprises. Every last morsel was delicious and SO fresh! All the ladies want her recipes!!! The meals were very fresh and the perfect portion size. All were presented as if we were at a 5-star resort. The quality of food was super fresh and it was a highlight of the trip.

We didn’t want any real structure and really made our plan on a daily basis about where we wanted to go. Captain Matt would ask us every day if we wanted to be around people or go to a quiet, secluded spot. Within a day, he got us down pat. Every stop was a surprise and we were all delighted with the choices. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, it did. We saw magnificent sunsets and many rainbows.

The cabins were roomy with lots of storage. Bed was comfy. Bathroom very nice. Much better than anticipated. We did not anticipate having our beds made every day and room tidied up, so that was a treat. All the areas were kept impeccably clean.

The crew made this trip! They were both so friendly and outgoing. They went out of their way to make sure we were always comfortable and even catered to some last minute, spontaneous, special requests. We really connected and became very friendly with them.
An Incredible Adventure
From the time we set foot on the Knot Achored we knew this was going to be a incredible adventure. Captain Matt and Chef Kendra welcomed us with open arms and made us feel right at home on their beautiful boat. We spent a week sailing the BVI's and could not have been any better. From the start, Caption Matt knew all the best beaches, best spots to snorkel, quite coves to anchor in for the night as well as great beach bars. Some of our favorite places were Jost Van Dyke where Soggy Dollar Bar and Foxy's. No trip is not complete without visiting White Bay, Virgin Gorda and the Baths.
Having an experienced Captain like Matt made a big difference. he always got us the best places to anchor near the beaches and to watch the sunset. Not to mention he sings, plays the guitar and makes a wicked margarita.
Chef Kendra is an incredible cook, preparing 5 star meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. During the day she always had a homemade snack for us to enjoy as well. She makes everything from scratch from the salad dressing to the pancakes.
I could go on and on about our incredible trip.
I would like to add when you visit the BVI's please make it a point to spend some time on the islands. They have been through a lot and are coming back strong. Make sure you check out the Micheal Bean show at Leverick Bay and Rumb Lines restaurant In St. Jones. When in Virgin Gorda check out CocoMaya restaurant on the beach.
Having a beautiful boat with Matt and Kendra made all the difference in having not an average trip but a 5 Star trip. Thank you guys and look forward to sailing with you again soon.

You Will Never Go Hungry & Always Have a Drink in Your Hands!
Just wanted to say thank you for providing us with a great vacation charter. We enjoyed how adventurous this vacation was. We saw so many islands in one week. Matt's recommendations for things to do were great. He knows his way around the Caribbean. There is never a "no" to any request.

Among the recommendations he gave us, Victoria loved the pirate show. We all loved the day trip to Anegada island stopping at various bars and enjoying the best lobster dinner. One of my favorite stops was Jost Van Dyke from the Bubbly Pool to Sandy Spit and the great beach bars. The catamaran is new, in excellent condition and very comfortable. We enjoyed the warm showers and a/c in our rooms. The kids enjoyed all the water sports: the island mat, snorkeling, etc.

Matt and Kendra are excellent hosts. You will never go hungry and will always have a drink in your hands. Kendra's food was yummy: from the pirate chicken to curry dishes to steaks and fish. Always juicy and flavorful. We are grateful!

The Crew Made it Extra Special
This is a great idea for a family or a group of couples who just want to relax and see the Caribbean in a totally different way. Everything we did was something that we couldn't have experienced if we were at a resort or on a cruise.

Captain Matt and Chef Kendra really made it extra special. My daughters said that it was like spending a week with really cool relatives. They were so easy to be with.

Kendra's cooking was amazing. We all enjoyed it.

February 2017

Captain Jannas and Chef Carolina catered to our every need, sometimes before we realized we even had a need! Whether it was a light meal of sushi and champagne upon boarding, a paper map of the area to chart our adventure, a cuddle puddle of pillows on the trampoline, or a bag full of costumes to dress up and be silly with, these two joyful people gave us the gift of a wholly wonderful experience. Snorkeling, swimming, sailing, wakeboarding, relaxing, exploring; we did it all and more. Captain is an extraordinarily handy fellow who seems to always have a solution for whatever the guests, the boat or the environment may throw at him. Chef is cosmic vixen that will amaze you with her healthy, delicious and sometimes sneaky cuisine. I came away completely flabbergasted at the amount of work these guys must do to keep a vessel clean and running tip top. And they did it all so (seemingly) effortlessly and gracefully! Their combined knowledge of and love for the sea as well as the boat was vast and imparted freely to us. Best of all they both possess effervescent personalities, even after a week of putting up with a group of such questionable characters like us. Our group is so thankful to have had Jannas and Carolina as our guides and adult-caretakers. As we say in California, “they crushed it!”
The Food Was Better Than Any Restaurant
There was nothing about our experience that was not enjoyable, well, except leaving. The food was better than any restaurant and the captain and his first mate's personality made for a perfect vacation. We did the half board, I was very surprised that everything was taken care of. Transportation when ashore, mooring fees, customs paper work, we didn't have to worry about anything other than enjoying the BVIs.

My wife and I have traveled to many Caribbean destinations, Hawaii, and thru out the US, this trip is by far my favorite, in fact we were not even home and we were already planning the next journey aboard Knot Anchored. Chris (Bismarck ND)
I Give This Charter a 5 Star Plus Rating
I have had the opportunity to travel to many places in the world and stay at some great resorts but this was by far the most memorable vacation yet. My girlfriend and two other couple arrived in St. Thomas and embarked Knot Anchored not really knowing what to expect. The boat was extremely clean and our rooms which each were equipped with their own private bathroom and showers were well equipped and very clean. We were welcomed by Stevo and Chrissy (the most wonderful crew ever). Champagne, snack and introductions were followed by quick departure to a quiet bay where we anchored and started our vacation.

From there on till end of the week we were wowed with 5 star meals prepared with consideration for my allergies while keeping everyone else happy (dairy and egg is not easy to cater too). We were in control over our itinerary each day and were able to decide what we want to do and how we want to spend the day. Our days included hanging out on secluded beaches, diving shipwrecks, paddle boarding, hiking through old ruins, visiting small beach bras, snorkeling and partying while completely disconnecting from our regular day to day (despite always having access to internet all of us chose to take the vacation in and forget about the daily stresses of our regular lives).

It has been two months since we have returned home and while we all continue to speak of this great vacation I am already a planning a trip back with my parents and my son.
I highly recommend this trip for everyone (families with kids, friends....). The value you get on this vacation is incomparable to even the highest rated resort (Sandals or any other place you can think of). I give this charter a 5 star plus rating.
Incredible Experience and Journey
We cannot thank you enough for this incredible experience and journey! Thanks to Knot Anchored we are going back to NYC with full hearts and clear minds.

The Food Was Delicious!
We had such a wonderful time! You both worked so hard to make it an unforgettable trip for all of us and it was! The food was delicious and all the excursions were a ton of fun. We definitely will tell our friends.
Thank you again for everything!!

Reviews for Matt & Kendra aboard previous yachts:

Everything was AWESOME! LOVED Matt & Kendra and the boat/trip couldn’t have been better.

Anna A, aboard Catamaran Zephyr sailing the Virgin Islands

Matt & Kendra welcomed us like old friends from the minute we stepped on board - they were fabulous! We were eager to get away from the harbor and they understood completely. Within minutes of stepping on board, we were off. Since we didn’t arrive until 4pm we didn’t go very far but Matt had a perfect spot picked out with fabulous snorkeling and a private cove for the evening.

Not only were they accommodating to our every need and request, but they came up with fabulous ideas that made every day an adventure. We enjoyed spectacular cocktails every evening on the upper deck in the beautiful setting of the BVIs.

Every day Matt seemed to bring out a new “toy” that not only the “kids” (ages 19-21) were eager to engage in but the adults tried a few as well. As our kids wrote in the Zephyr book when we left ”it’s not always about where you go, but who you go with - Matt & Kendra became family”.

The Zephyr was spectacular. Every inch of the boat was constructed so efficiently and seemed far more spacious than its 50 feet. The beds were extremely comfortable and Kendra spoiled us all by cleaning our rooms every day and even changing sheets and towels midway through. There is always a little noise from the generator but that didn’t seem to bother anyone. It’s hard to pick a favorite aspect of the boat but I think we all spent the most amount of time on the upper deck which was wonderful to be on anytime of the day. We all enjoy our coffee in the morning and the boat had some of the best coffee I’ve ever had. Sipping that on the upper deck in the quiet of the morning was priceless!

I’m not sure Kendra ever slept, she was always busy preparing the next meal or making the kitchen spotless - she worked so hard! She spoiled us all with her cooking.

We talked extensively with Matt about the itinerary and I would not have changed anything. He understood what we wanted and what we had seen in the past and made fabulous suggestions on where to go next - So happy we made it to Anegada, especially because we got to spend the day together with Matt & Kendra!

John Lane at Sailing Directions seemed to be waiting on the other end every time I sent an email - the service was top notch!

Anna A, aboard Catamaran Zephyr sailing the Virgin Islands

Matt and Kendra were amazing! They really took the time to plan a great itinerary taking into consideration what everyone wanted to do during the trip. There were 8 of us (4 couples) so there was a lot to consider. We've all done charters in BVI in the past and they did a great job ensuring that we saw some new places and were able to enjoy some of our favorite spots.

Matt is a very capable Captain and everyone felt safe with him at the helm. Kendra is a fantastic chef and the food she prepared was delicious! They both worked very hard to ensure everyone was taken care of and had a great time. They are such a hardworking crew. We were totally impressed.

Zephyr is a beautiful yacht. It was spotless and well ventilated. Everyone was incredibly comfortable. The outdoor seating was great and was so important to all of us. That is what really sold us on the Zephyr was the amount of great outdoor seating. You spend most of your time on deck and we wanted to be comfortable - and it was. There was plenty of space for all 8 of us whether we all wanted to be together or needed some downtime.

We appreciated the amenities the owners purchased. The memory foam on the beds, the Jura coffee maker, the paddleboards, kayaks, etc. The kitchen was so well equipped which made the meals Kendra prepared just amazing. Matt and Kendra kept the boat clean and organized throughout the trip.

Kendra did an amazing job of catering to everyone's likes/dislikes. Half the group are really picky eaters and they were very happy with the food and the extra time she took to ensure they ate well. Every meal was beautifully presented, and just delicious. We only ate dinner onshore once and it was not very good compared to Kendra's cooking.

Matt and Kendra did a great job taking us to places we have not seen before and were not crowded with tourists. They really paid attention to what we wanted to do and to see. We were 100% satisfied with our itinerary.

Sailing Directions did a great job thorough out the process. This trip on the Zephyr was amazingly relaxing and we did not have to think about anything, plan, cook, or clean. Matt and Kendra were so attentive, we ate so well and the bar was very well stocked.

Lindi R, aboard Catamaran Zephyr sailing the Virgin Islands

The trip was incredible.

Matt & Kendra could not have been more accommodating. Matt's sailing ability and knowledge was incredible, I felt extremely safe with him at the wheel. He amazed me at times maneuvering through some very busy moorings, what a pro! Kendra's cooking was awesome, so very good, perfectly presented. Kendra was more than accommodating and would go out of her way to ensure we were all well taken care of.

Zephyr was perfect, just what we had wanted. The upper deck seating was important to us and provided our group with a perfect place for friendly conversation, cocktails and sunning while we sailed. The rooms were spotless and air conditioned, we could not have asked for more.

The food was professionally prepared, Kendra is a pro. Her presentation of each meal was that of a 5 star restaurant. Kendra went out of her way to ensure that everyone had plenty to eat. Her appetizers were out of this world.

The itinerary that Matt planned for us was so much more than we expected, he went above and beyond. We wanted to see off the beaten path areas. Matt took us to places that were less traveled. Our favorite place was Anegada.
