Catamaran Pelican Overview

Pelican, previously named Fantasy Island, raises the bar for affordable luxury charters! This exciting 58ft catamaran's sleek lines, high tech construction and modern interior have earned her the prestigious award of "Best Cruising Catamaran of 2003" from Cruising World Magazine, and she sails just as fast as she looks!

Clever design gives Pelican more usable space than many yachts her size, allowing her to accommodate up to 10 guests in air-conditioned staterooms with four queen-sized beds and one double-sized room all with vacuum-flush bathrooms. The crew has separate accommodation and bathroom.

The salon is open and spacious and includes the galley, with serving counter, a bar and comfortable seating. You can watch a movie on the larger flat-screen TV with Bose sound system, listen to some good music, or just relax in air-conditioned comfort. There's also full-time Internet access and a phone for your convenience. At night, recessed LED lighting provides a dramatic effect.

Just aft of the salon is the cockpit area with dining tables on both sides. The cockpit has a permanent carbon-fiber bimini overhead to protect you from the sun, and the entire cockpit area can be enclosed in the event of rain. The cockpit is at deck level, so you don't need to climb in or out of it you simply walk through the aft entry opening to the deck beyond.

Each hull has wide stern steps leading down to the water for swimming or diving, with a fold-down stainless steel ladder. You can enter the dinghy easily, thanks to the design of the boarding platform, which is the same height as the dinghy's inflatable tubes. A fresh-water hot and cold shower is located at each stern platform, so you can rinse off after swimming.

Sun lovers particularly enjoy the large forward trampolines and seats built into the bow railing each side. This is a very popular spot both at anchor and under sail. Directional Bose speakers mounted on the mast can play music for your enjoyment. Due to the massive sails, there's usually some shade from the sun on one side of the boat or the other when under way.

Pelican has twin engines for reliability under power, two generators to assure you of electricity whenever needed, and a large (65 gallons per hour) water maker to provide an uninterrupted water supply throughout your charter. She points higher into the wind than most cruising sailboats and sails faster, all without noticeable heel and without the fuss of a conventional sailboat. Her performance never ceases to surprise experienced charter guests (and the other boats as you pass them)!

Meet the Crew

Paul & Eva

Captain: Paul Porter (29)

Paul has had a love for life on the water since a very young age sailing, surfing, competitive kite boarding and scuba diving. Being near or on the water has always been of great importance to him. Captaining boats up to 65 feet and hosting guests aboard is second nature to him. In 2010, Paul acquired the S/V Seaker, an Islander 30 moored in Seattle, Washington. After six years of ownership he has restored her from the keel up, learning many useful skills along the way. Paul has had the opportunity to lead sailing charters alongside his chef, first mate Eva Mrak-Blumberg in their home waters of the Puget Sound to Italy, Greece, Croatia, Sweden and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. You can also find Paul and Eva sailing the US Virgin Islands and British Virgin Islands year round aboard S/V Pelican, a 58ft catamaran based out of Saint Thomas.

When not living a nautical life, Paul works in New York City as a documentary photographer and lighting director in the fashion industry. He is also a well recognized teacher of outdoor photography, kiteboarding and sailing who happily shares his knowledge and experience to guest on board.

Chef-Mate: Eva Mrak-Blumberg (27)

Eva draws her inspiration as a chef from her worldwide travels and adventures, highlighting seasonality, and introducing guests to local food. She serves eclectic meals for individual families that are unique, beautiful, and delicious. Before working at Pentesilea, she worked as a personal chef in New York City where she made customized meals weekly for families. With a degree in anthropology from Colorado College, she finds and highlights elements of local culture, incorporating whatever flavors she discovers at each stop along the way. She provisions as close to the source as she can, using the highest quality ingredients available and cooking from scratch to bring meals that are fresh and exciting. She has ample experience tailoring meals to specific dietary restrictions and preferences including but not limited to, dairy and gluten intolerance, paleo, kosher, vegetarian and vegan. Originally from Seattle, Eva is an outdoor adventurist who spends any time she can rock climbing, hiking, backpacking, and scuba diving. She has operated charters as Chef and First Mate with Captain Paul all over the world including the British Virgin Islands, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Italy, Croatia, Greece, Sweden, and her home of Washington State...read more

First of all it was a fantastic trip we enjoyed the week with the boys and girlfriends and the surprise was a hit. Eva and Paul were the perfect fit for us and the boys. We had amazing meals and we did lots of stuff whether it was heading into shore to visit a bar or using the toys on the boat. We told them we would be doing a write up on trip advisor for them as well.

Missing you guys already. Thanks so much for being such wonderful hosts.

You 2 made our trip with your delicious food and the entertainment/skill of Captain Paul. There was just the right amount of relaxation and activities. The guys and gals tell everyone it was the best trip of their life, and they have all been to Asia, Europe and Mexico, etc.

We really enjoyed our stint at the helm.

Thank you for sharing your love of BVI with the Murphys
More guest comments for Paul and Eva on PELICAN:
We had an amazing vacation aboard the Pelican. The boat is clean, newly renovated and absolutely beautiful sailing along the water. Paul is an amazing captain. He is very knowledgeable in all aspects of sailing. We learned a lot and it was so great that he was willing and interested to teach us about sailing and he is a lot of fun! Eva is an amazing chef! I still dream about her incredible meals. From her special cocktails at sunset to her pulled pork that she was making for days, I had some of the best meals of my life. Every breakfast, lunch and dinner was absolutely beautiful in presentation and had incredible flavors. She also makes sure that she knows the likes and dislikes of everyone on the boat so that she can ensure that everyone has a great meal every time. This was our second boat vacation and again we loved every minute of our trip!

...For me, I say without hesitation that this was the greatest vacation of all time. It actually felt more like two trips: an exotic adventure crossed with a five star food and wine excursion.

...The Boat so much larger than expected. The rooms were two to three times larger than the beds. The showers were large even though we chose to use the outdoor showers after exiting the water. We found that the community areas were perfect to hold all nine of us and there were also many places to hide and get some alone time when needed.

...Paul Paul has this amazing knack of anticipating our needs. When we wanted adventure, he gave us adventure. When we wanted to get off the boat, get off the boat, just hang and relax, he always was one step ahead of us. He was so accommodating and could easily transition between this first class butler/attendant, adventure surfer/guide, DJ, bartender, and all while safely navigating the BVIs!

... Eva - She spoiled us with super creative, beautifully plated dishes. I literally could not wait to see what she prepared next from breakfast to lunch followed by a post activity snack and dinner. ...Every meal had different proteins, varied ethnicities, fresh veggies, and amazing flavors. She constantly surprised and taught me so much about new combinations and techniques. Long story short, Look up the Pelican/EVA/PAUL for some amazing food, adventure, relaxation and safe non sun-burnt fun in the BVIs. We cannot wait to sail with them again.

Our kids still ask about Paul and Eva. They were amazing teachers about the craft of sailing and all things BVI. Safety came first; they made it fun for the kids and relaxing for the parents. They took all of our (often disparate) plans and wishes into consideration and did so openly and graciously. Christmas 2016 was among the best for us (maybe the single best?) and Paul, Eva and Pelican deserve credit and many thanks for that!

Paul and Eva are tremendous. It's not easy to welcome new guests into your life, andthey did it with grace and ease. We see the USVI/BVI trip as one of the most amazing and rewarding trips we take every year. To have trusted crew that have a genuine concern for our well being - in addition to some exceedingly brilliant meals - I'm honored to have their company. And yes, he's a brilliant photographer. And yes, Eva cooks up a storm. Bravo!
