Captain Pogan grew up in a boating family. From childhood his family owned a boat and summer vacations were spent at Lake Cumberland. At the tender age of five years old he was helping his dad steer the family pontoon boat.
Captain Gregory Pogan first visited St Thomas in the summer of 1998, to witness a wedding. Falling in love with the islands, he did not waste any time, and moved to St Thomas in the fall of 1998. Captain Pogan has spent the last 15 years exploring the waters of the Virgin Islands as a rescue diver and charter captain. Originally from Ohio he studied Management and Marketing at Ashland University, but after working on land in St Thomas for almost two years realized that his passion was for boating and the sea, started earning his USCG 100 Ton license in 2001.
"Pogan" as he likes to be called, loves nothing more than to be on the water, with visitors and locals alike, sharing the beautiful sights, abundant nature, and amazing stories he has collected over the years about our local Caribbean islands. Laid back, professional, and knowledgeable are some terms frequently used to describe his personality. Captain Pogan looks forward to helping Safari's guests have experiences and create memories that they will treasure for a lifetime!
Chef Julia Ray grew up in Michigan surrounded by the Great Lakes, and learned to love boating and sailing on frequent family outings. Julia first began visiting the Virgin Islands with her family more than 30 years ago and began making annual trips back. Her love for the islands led her to determine that one day; she would make them her permanent home. ..read more
Growing up, Julia's family was passionate about cooking and instilled that passion in her. Julia worked in the restaurant and hospitality industries, and had a small catering business while earning degrees in both accounting and social work. Although she had a successful career in the corporate world, Julia left it all behind in 2013 to realize her dream of living in the Virgin Islands and joined her husband, Stephan, aboard Safari as mate and chef.
Energetic and personable, Julia loves meeting and entertaining people. Julia's hobbies include running and swimming. She also spends much of her spare time in the kitchen, preparing and perfecting new recipes for friends and family to sample. Julia delights in spoiling Safari's guests with gourmet meals and tempting treats. She prepares a wide variety of meals, and especially enjoys highlighting local ingredients and cuisine. Special diets or food allergies are no problem. Julia takes much pride in her ability to tailor each meal to her guest's individual tastes!

Ian Thank you for taking care of us so well this week! I am very impressed that you could consistently please everyone (age 6-44+) with your delicious meals. We will be talking about them for a long time.

We like the Boat! We like the Captain! We like the food! This was our first charter experience, and it was really wonderful. The boat is very nicely appointed and was very comfortable, but the attention to our comfort really made the difference. The itinerary was just perfect, and gave us a great taste of the Virgin Islands.
Ian - The food was a nice surprise. You really exceeded our expectations, and Ill be trying to replicate some of your sauces. Amazing that you could pull it off in that tiny galley.
Ed What a great experience getting to sail the boat, and take the helm! You picked just the right spots Cane Garden Bay and snorkeling Monkey Point, diving the Rhone It was all great! Thanks for a truly memorable vacation.

As I have learned this week of the thirst for treasure over the centuries in these islands, I have reflected on the notion that the best treasure is what you take with you everywhere the love of your family, your faith in what you believe in, and the memories and experience gathered over your life. I can tell you that I have added substantial booty to my chest this week.
Ed, the care and warmth you have invested in our journey has been as welcome as the first happy hour libation, or Ians appetizers that satisfy and offer promise for the delectable meal that ensues. Your knowledge and competency kept us all feeling safe, and ready for whatever unfolded. Your guided tours and tales of the islands enriched our immersion into this unique part of the world. I felt how sincerely you wanted us to have a great week, and you delivered. Thanks Capn.
Ian, the fruits of your skilled labor will stay with me longer than I care to contemplate. Your ability to keep our ravenous kids fed and entertained was remarkable. You are a rock star to them and a friend to us. Thanks for the memorable and healthy meals and good cheer. Best of luck with the boat! With gratitude to our fine crew,
P.S. What a fine boat! Perfect for our family
Blue Water, Blue Sky, Brown Booze. We found it all here. Skipping island to island, we didnt land too many fish, but many a memory from wind surfing to catch phrase. From scuba diving to fine dining, From Willy Ts family album to some wacky Rastas at Foxys, we did it all. It nearly brought a tear to daddys eye when he was reunited with his old hat at Foxys. I took my first scuba trip 50 feet below the waves, and entered a world I had never imagined was available. Jenn, MC, and Mom all baked in the sun and read something near 20 books. Jumping off the bow of the boat brought great laughs and splendid pictures. Though we didnt find any pirates booty, we had an exceptionally awesome time, and I cant wait until we come back. The food by chef Ian was superb, and the captaining by White Bearded Ed was great. Teri provided a wonderful smile, and great help w/Ed and the windsurf board. One Love, Brudda

This was our honeymoon, and it was definitely special. We had planned this trip for awhile and it definitely met all our expectations. We came with no plans, just to relax, and we were definitely in good hands. The snorkeling was great, and we even got to see a shark! Thankfully we were on the boat :-) We accomplished our task of relaxing. Also, the food was amazing. Thanks for everything.
Chris & Stephanie D.
Stephen & Julia are extremely knowledgeable - very, very accommodating - they sat down with us and listened to our requests, thoughts, etc. to make a plan for the week - and then each day the schedule was addressed and our requests were foremost in their decisions as to what to do. We felt like they had all the knowledge of what we’d like to do and when, and they put together great itineraries.
Safari exceeded our expectations - plenty of room, lots of area to gather, or to be alone. Beds were really comfortable, and everything was so clean.
The food was beyond our expectations! Julia is an amazing cook - delicious and gorgeous presentation! She customized to us - only complaints are that she fed us too much and that we had to come home without her!
We felt like we did the perfect option with the half board - the benefit of Julia’s amazing cooking, and also being able to sample some of the local flavor at dinners and lunch.
We had an incredible time - exceeded our expectations in every way! Thanks to you too for coordinating for us - made everything run very smoothly. We really appreciated the advice regarding packing - we did a pretty good job with that. Pre-planning and prep was great and easy. Will definitely recommend to others! And we’ll be back, too!

Stephen & Julia were top notch. We enjoyed not only their professionalism and great ideas about where to go and what to see, but also their stories and meeting good friends of theirs along the way. They really made the trip memorable and relaxing. It was clear from the minute we stepped on Safari that we had chosen a great crew, but by the end of the week we had also made new friends.
Safari was perfect, in excellent physical condition and perfectly laid out for our family of 4. We loved the front sitting area to relax with great views while underway and the rear table and sitting area was perfect for not just meals but gathering for games and cocktails.
The food was great. Julia made lots of different dishes and we enjoyed them all. We didn’t have a lot of specific preferences and were very happy with all of her cooking. Come hungry as there’s always lots to eat and drink.
We loved the itinerary sailing the Virgin Islands. We liked the route and all the moorages but what really made the trip special was Stephen & Julia’s local knowledge. They showed us a handful of small beach towns and the local vibe of each place. We met a number of their friends and really enjoyed seeing some of the spots off the beaten path.
Sailing Directions was great. Everything was easy and all my questions were answered promptly. The website and information shared for what to pack, where to stay on St. Thomas, etc. was very helpful.

Stephen and Julia were wonderful. They took care of our every need. They accommodated every request. They were most friendly and a real joy.

Thank you so much for all of your help with planning our family vacation. It was better than we ever imagined! The Safari was a great boat and Stephen and Julia, were wonderful. I would definitely recommend you to friends and hopefully we will charter again soon!
Stephen and Julia really went out of their way to make this a memorable trip! The boat was very immaculate! I was pleased with having a separate A/C units in each room.
Julie did an amazing job with the meals, desserts and appetizers. You definitely won't leave hungry!
The itinerary was perfect. Since it was a busy time to be there, Stephen seemed to know exactly when to get to each destination before the crowd! He is also well liked on the islands. Everyone knew him!
I was very happy with the service Sailing Directions provided. John was very informative and prompt on answering all of my questions! We would love to charter again. I would definitely recommend your company to friends.
Tara P, aboard Catamaran Safari sailing the Virgin Islands
I wanted to say what a great time we had. Safari was a really fabulous boat - stylish, immaculate and very well laid out and equipped. And Stephen and Erin are a wonderful crew - highly competent and very attentive and hospitable but at the same time laid back and not intrusive. We felt in very safe hands with Stephen, and Erin is a really excellent cook. We have become converts to crewed catamarans and suspect this experience will be hard to beat.
Rupert B, aboard Catamaran Safari sailing the Virgin Islands
Stephen and Erin were great! Very accommodating, had everything well planned out, and were kind and thoughtful.
Safari was very clean and comfortable.
The food was excellent. My son has a gluten allergy that Erin took great care to accommodate and everything still tasted terrific. I was very impressed.
Did you enjoy the itinerary and the area you sailed?
- Absolutely. We got exactly what we asked for and more.
