Luiz & Mauriane
Luiz and Mauriane first met 11 years ago and immediately felt in love. The scenario could not be more inspiring: a beautiful beach in the south of Brazil, almost a magical place with lots of sea turtles, fishing boats and a rocky shoreline. It was the moment they decided to travel the world on a sailboat.
Luiz was born and grew up in this very exact place, where he learnt how to sail when he was only 6 years old with his father, onboard a canoe with a square sail. His salty blood kept him connected to sea all the time and at the age of 18 he became a fisher man, as his father was and for 2 years he experienced how the life at the blue sea could be.
Mauriane was born very far from the sea. After going to the university and working for 12 years as a dentist, she became a sea and sail lover through the eyes of Luiz.
Soon after, they started traveling the world together hunting for their home. They ended up in Italy where they bought Cascalho (gravel), their first boat, named in honor of the beach where they first met.
The passion for traveling took them to so many different places, where they learnt a lot about tourism, sail life, food, entertainment and enjoying beautiful moments in life.
After discovering the Mediterranean, crossing the Atlantic from Gibraltar to the South of Brazil in order to be able to share the joy of this great adventure with family and friends, they finally arrived in the Caribbean Sea, where they decided to live for a few years. Operating a crewed yacht charter became the obvious way to make this change happen. ..read more
Tonina, an Arawak word for Dolphin, is their second boat and the dream coming true: a beautiful and spacious Lagoon 500!
Together they have already sailed 30 thousand miles, and so many of them were done chartering in the beautiful Virgin Islands. Popping from island to island, finding the best anchorages, the most beautiful beaches and spots to watch the sun setting, amazing beach bars, incredible snorkel spots, discovering the authentic Caribbean Cuisine and Cocktails and the art and history of this part of the world.
They love water sports! Apart from sharing their passion for sailing, Luiz can also share his passion for surfing and kitesurfing for those interested in that, as long as they bring their own equipment. As for Mauriane, preparing enticing meals is a passion influenced by their travels and is reflected in the cuisine aboard Tonina. A diverse mix is always on the menu with the guest's special preferences fully catered for. With the use of fresh, local ingredients and focus on detail, her meals will exceed the expectations of her guests.
The opportunity to combine their skills with their passions, makes everything so special. Our trip to the BVI was the best trip we have ever taken. Peter and Karen were so welcoming from the moment we set foot onto the Tonina. There is not one negative thing I could say about our entire week aboard. The boat was immaculate and the accommodations were extremely comfortable. The food was delicious and Karen managed to please the many different tastes in our family of five. It was the best we have eaten on a vacation in a very long time.
Each day was a new adventure and Peter was an excellent tour guide. I can't say enough about Karen and Peter and their hospitality. Our time spent with them is another reason our vacation was so special. They are fun and easygoing and adapted to my family's personality immediately. I can only hope that we can meet up with them again someday!
I would gladly talk to anyone who had questions about chartering because It was truly an unforgettable trip.

We had a most enjoyable time with our crew, Peter and Karen. They were both delightful, and they spent plenty of time with us but also respected our privacy. They seem to have a great knack for knowing when to socialize, and when to give us privacy with our friends. Two of our group were very interested in the sailing, and Peter made the effort to get us involved as much as possible.
We found Tonina to be very comfortable, and had no problems whatsoever. I was a little surprised to find that the cabins were air-conditioned, and at first I thought that was perhaps a bit overkill. However, by the end of the trip I realized that with the relative lack of outside ventilation available to the cabins, air-conditioning is by far the best way to keep them comfortable. The boat itself is amazingly comfortable; it was thoroughly enjoyable to drink our morning coffee up on the front deck and then dive in for a swim. The freshwater shower on the back of the port hull was much appreciated.
The food was exactly as we had hoped. Some of the meals were fairly simple but healthy and nutritious, as we had requested. Other meals were appropriately more extravagant; there was no shortage of drinks, desserts, and nothing lacking.
Peter did a great job with the itinerary, choosing good anchorages based on the prevailing wind and waves. The snorkeling was fine, and so were the swimming and the beaches.
Were also very happy with Sailing Directions’ service. You have been very responsive and informative throughout the whole process.

Charter Tonina in the British Virgin Islands, a collection of beautiful islands that have been popular with charter guests for many years. Several of the islands are un-inhabited and most have secluded anchorages. Distances between islands are short, which means that there is plenty of time for activities, or time just to chill.
Visit The Baths on Virgin Gorda, a trail through giant boulders Grenadines where the sea and sunlight meet to give a dazzling display. Jost Van Dyke, the "barefoot" island, is known for its fine beaches, restaurants and bars. The sunken island of Anegada is unspoilt, famous for its wildlife and is always worth the trip.
A typical day aboard Tonina starts when you wake up in that specially chosen secluded anchorage and enjoy breakfast before moving on to our next destination. Stop for some fun with Tonina's wide range of water sports facilities while lunch is prepared for you. Arrive at our final resting place for the day in good time for a swim or a walk ashore. Maybe a cocktail or two as the sun falls over the horizon before your evening meal is served. Relax onboard or go ashore to visit the local bars before retiring to your comfortable cabin to rest and recharge for the day to come.
Every day is as different as you want it to be.
There's always plenty to do for those who want to explore further or just have some fun.
Tonina's tender is a powerful AB rigid inflatable with a light weight aluminum hull coupled to one of Yamaha's quietest running four-stroke outboards. This combination is ideal for water sports and with water skis, wake board, knee board & fun tube, there's plenty of scope for an exciting ride.
Use the two inflatable two-man kayaks for a relaxing paddle around the anchorage, or perhaps a more energetic race for those with a competitive spirit.
We have a full complement of snorkeling gear so you can explore the nearby reefs and caves directly from the swim-platform, which has a shower for when you return. We can also arrange rendezvous diving for qualified divers who want to explore the beautiful reefs more closely.
For those who want to venture ashore, we can guide you to a number of walks and show you some of the hidden treasures of these fabulous islands.
