Teddy Waldo

William "Teddy" Waldo has been sailing the waters of the BVI's since the early 1990s when he was three. He became a first mate at age 11 and completed his keel boat training at 16. He graduated High School as Valedictorian at 17 and attended both Middlebury College and Northern Arizona University but his passion for both the sea and the friendly culture and people of the British Virgin Islands brought him back to the Islands. He began his captaining career in early 2012 when he began work for a prominent BVI based charter company . He was able to exponentially expand both his sailing experience and practical knowledge of the Voyage boats by working in many different capacities for the company for over four years. When not on charter, Teddy worked with the maintenance team as well as did briefings for clients chartering vessels as bareboat captains. He currently has a 200 ton commercial license, is a PADI certified Advanced Open Water Diver and has completed his Marine Safety STCW 10 in addition to his training in First Aid and Security.

While on charter, Teddy's easy going nature, patience and sense of balancing both safety, and fun allow guests to fully enjoy their vacation. His mastery of the boat systems makes guests feel at ease and his expert knowledge of the islands and their waters adds something special to each voyage. The eldest of five, Ted is excellent with children and enjoys opening their eyes to the wonders of the ocean. Whether guests enjoy lounging in a secluded bay, snorkeling a beautiful coral reef or a shipwreck, sailing fast on a beam reach, lazily traveling downwind or finding the best place to enjoy a cocktail, Teddy knows just how to help guests realize their ideal vacation. ..read more

Although Kristen was born and raised in Colorado, her ocean influence began at an early age. Her family holiday home was in Kona, Hawaii and was the place she became entranced by the sea and what lived in it. She was Junior Open Water Scuba Dive certified at 14 and was diving, snorkeling and surfing at a young age. She was also a competitive swimmer, swimming in summer leagues since she was five and competed for her high school.

She began working in restaurants at 16 and was continually involved in the restaurant industry while attending college. She graduated from Colorado State University and immediately began working for celebrity Chef Tyler Florence in the San Francisco Bay Area, assisting with his restaurant and retail operations. She assisted with the promotions and openings of all three of his restaurants and was the Assistant Brand Merchant for his kitchen and home shops. She was also highly involved with his food branding projects as well as his wine label.

After a friend has told her about the Virgin Islands and the employment opportunities available while living on a tropical island her move was eminent. She started working at XO Bistro helping to build and create a revamped wine list with her experience and knowledge with her previous position with the renowned restaurant group. She continued to further her wine education and was certified with the Grand Master Sommelier for the first level course.

However, she soon was becoming disenchanted with the idea of living on land while being so close to the sea. An opportunity presented itself for a major life change. She went on a sailing trip with a group of friends and one of them was looking for a chef for his next season of sail chartering and offered her the job, it didn't take her long to accept the offer.

She is now back in the Caribbean for another charter season and is working as crew on boat deliveries, the most recent being a transatlantic crossing. She has expanded her diving career into free-diving after completing her first course with plans to continue into an Instructors role. She is also planning her Yacht Masters for the next year and is looking forward to continue cooking, sailing and exploring the beautiful Virgin Islands for another charter season.

We chartered the 52 catamaran called windscape for a very special Christmas and New Years experience with our family. Our family of three boys, three girlfriends and us!! We were extremely pleased with the boat and captain and entire trip. The boat is in excellent condition and it both sails beautifully and is nicely appointed. The space is cleverly designed - including two living areas and four very equal bedrooms with ensuites. The kitchen is well outfitted and works very well - talk about a room with a view!
Teddy, our captain is both very knowledgable about sailing and the Virgin Islands plus great fun. We sailed as much as we wanted (which was a lot - and in the open big Christmas winds) and made time to use the onboard water sports equipment. We loved kayaking, SUPing, snorkelling and exploring in the dingy. Fishing was an added thrill. Our boys are very keen fishermen but catching ten large fish in ten days was hugely exciting!! Marlin, barracuda, little tunny & King fish - some we released and some we cleaned and barbecued onboard. Hours from ocean to plate - delicious!

Teddy helped organize scuba (pick up from Windscape), lobster snarring, conch catching (made fresh ceviche) and great dining spots. We choose to have a captain so we could sail but not have the full responsibility of the boat and we would have a built-in local guide. We had the boat provisioned in St. Thomas for breakfasts and lunches and we then went out for all dinners. We found it great fun to have the flexibility to explore the islands at night.

I would love to repeat our exact trip and definitely with Teddy. Teddy became part of our family, another of our sons on the trip and we invited him to join us on excursions and dinners.

BEST family trip ever!

Quick note of thanks for a wonderful trip! Your charter company is the best! The boat was perfect! We just loved everything about it.

What also made our trip was our friend Teddy! The most professional, kind, intelligent and fun captain ever. We could not have asked for a better person to help navigate and make us feel safe each day. Honestly, we made a great friend and would highly recommend Teddy for all charters! Absolutely, the sweetest person EVER!!

So, thank you for helping my friends and family have a trip of a lifetime.

We will hopefully return again!
All the best!

I want to drop a note about our recent Charter. We had a trip with Teddy and Kenetha in early January. I have made this trip four times now and this was the first trip with my family. We had such a great trip that I wanted to make sure and let you know how much we enjoyed Teddy and Kenetha. They have a way to blend total professionalism with a great time. The food was just awesome and Teddy takes great care to work an agenda that was perfect for us. I would love to sail with them again and could recommend them to anyone.

, I wanted to contact you and let you know what a wonderful trip we recently had with Teddy and Kenetha. Teddy is wise and mature beyond his years and did a wonderful job both as Captain and tour guide. My wife and I celebrated both her birthday and our anniversary and Kenetha had decorations and baked a cake. We go away every November to celebrate and this was our most memorable trip to date. Please let the Voyage team know how much we appreciated the kindness that Teddy and Kenetha showed us and what a wonderful time we had. We'll be back.

Teddygreetings from Virginia. It was 26 degrees this morningwish I was somewhere else!

I cant tell you how much our group appreciated your captain and tour guide skills. We continue to talk about our trip with friends that have also been to the BVI, and invariably we hear from them, we didnt get to do that. It truly was the best vacation that Farley and I have ever had.

A friend asked me if I would go again, and I told him that was not the proper question. The better question is when are we going again!

On a serious note, I cant tell you how impressed I am with your maturity at your ageyou were more than competent in handling the boat (which was not surprising), but your people skills and ability to handle your guests were truly remarkable. I have a very mature 28 year old daughter that I am very proud of, and your interpersonal skills and your ability to juggle your responsibilities continued to amaze me.

I know you probably wont skipper people for the rest of your life, and I know you have plans for a different lifestyle. If I can help with a letter of recommendation, please let me know.

I sincerely hope that our time together a couple of weeks ago will not be the last time our paths cross, and I look forward to keeping up with you in the future, wherever your plans take you.

Again, thank you for a week that Farley and I will always remember! And please tell Kenetha we are still talking about her food!!

October 2015
We are now wrapping up our Caribbean holiday and headed to the airport in Antigua.

I'd like to say that Kenetha was great. Very warm personality and food was always unique and very much enjoyed. Her hugs we simply infectious.

Finally, I'd like to say more than a few words about Captain Ted. Put simply, amazing Captain and host. He was able to bridge the gap between incredibly active with the family unit to wonderful dialogue with the adults. Ted has such a wonderful disposition and our kids truly loved swimming, snorkelling, fishing and just hanging out with Captain Ted. He really went above and beyond when it came to his engagement with our children.

Thanks again,
John, Christina, Jack, Isabella and Finlay "R"
