Meet the Crew

Ted & Lesliana

Capt. Ted grew up in chilly Chicago, on the blustery shores of Lake Michigan, but left for the sunny climes of South Florida for school. This was followed by 25 years in the heart of American viticulture, the Napa Valley. There, Ted was involved in making and marketing wine worldwide. Eventually fate lead Ted to the sailing capital of Newport, and he has since pursued his love of yachting and the water. The BVI fell onto Ted's navigational chart 4 years ago and he has been providing a bespoke experience to his charter guests ever since. His intimate knowledge of the islands allows for a one of a kind island adventure.

Summer seasons will see Capt. Ted returning Campai to the waters of New England, while in the Winters Ted and Campai return to the sunny Caribbean.

Lesliana was born and raised in Switzerland. After her studies of applied linguistics in Zurich, she was employed as an interpreter in the region of Winterthur. An avid, sports-minded traveller, she used her summer holidays to improve her sailing skills. As her passion for sailing grew, she went to sea on a regular basis. Her skill and aptitude for languages enabled her to work on boats in several countries. Outgoing and enthusiastic, she easily interacted with people wherever she went, welcoming people in their mother tongue. A few years ago, Lesliana arrived in the Caribbean, where she worked as a chef, primarily for families on weekly charters. Her passion for cooking was inspired by the culinary skills of her grandmother, who prepared delicious meals for memorable family dinners.

Lesliana takes great pleasure in preparing tasty food to put on the table for people to share and enjoy.

March 2016 - Spanish & US Virgin Islands, repeat guests, two couples:
Trip number 8 on Campai. You will realise that (our) eighth (trip) on Campai means the treatment is +++. We left from Fajardo, Puerto Rico, Viequez, St Croix, St John, Culebra. The Spanish Virgin Islands are as laid back as if they were in the year 2000. The problem is what will we do next year, Barney? Mayra was our Stewardess this year, Dutch-Irish combination, what better can you wish?? Thanks folks. Hope to see you in 2017 (deo volente). Viva sailing, viva Campai, viva Barney, Diane & Mayra!
February 2016 - St. Lucia to Grenada, three couples:
Barney, Diane and Mayra - We have all had a splendid week - you have looked after us, and all our needs, in a lovely, relaxed and cheerful manner with the most delicious feasts. Idyllic sailing, island-hopping, turquoise seas, all from an immaculate Campai, sailed so professionally. So enjoyed our nights at the movies (especially "Around the Horn"). Huge thanks - Margie, Judy, David, Jeremy, Robin & Di
New Year 2015/2016 - British Virgin Islands, family of 6:
Barney, Diane & Scarlett, our family say GRACIAS! What a week of exploration, indulgence, invigoration and relaxation. You balanced our many whims from guacamole to Tarzan swings, to opening coconuts, to water-skiing, to dinghy transport, to the early morning run to the airport and our final white sand beach stroll. Di's food never ceased to amaze us day and night. We will never forget the first lunch - rice, mango, mint & shrimp - LUNCH?! Fancy folded napkins followed at dinner. New Years at Anagada - wow - out there! Thank you crew for getting us there in high winds and bringing us back! Hope to see you in the States - more fog awaits! Thank you - Robinsons
August 2015 - Newport, RI - Block Island, family of 6:
Barney, Diane & Nicola - Absolutely glorious! We loved, loved, loved our brief trip with you from Newport to Block Island and back. The boat is stunning; the food spectacular and you were a lot of fun. Hope to see you next year!
August 2015 - Maine, family of 4:
Barney, Diane & Nicola. Thanks for a great NYYC cruise! Especially thanks for dealing so well with all the flag etiquette and other ceremonial things. We can't thank you enough for everything you did to make our cruise most memorable. We enjoyed every moment aboard Campai. Thank you. Safe journeys - Vice Commodore NYYC, & guests

April 2015 BVIs, Family of 6:
Dearest Barney, Diane and Sophie: Even a 29 page itinerary could not capture the essence of our family dream vacation. Beyond the spectacular meals, the great drinks and fantastic sails through the BVI, the greatest joy and happiness was sharing the time with you. Thank you for your hospitality and thank you CAMPAI for a safe and luxurious journey. Hugs and thanks ever so much. Edward, Karen, Wills, Kabele, Prescott and Conrad.
Dear Barney, Diane and Sophie, What an amazing week you have provided for our Cook Clan! Bravo! We were spoiled by your creativity and great healthy cuisine! Sophie, her sweet magical way of keeping Campai spotless and her guests well watered and pampered! J With our heartfelt thanks for every sail, every delicious meal, turned down bed and dinghy ride but more importantly for every laugh and lesson on life and your friendship! You all made the trip so amazing and special that included many laughs, yummy meals, and unending kindness. Thank you so much again for an adventure I cannot forget! daughter, aged 17
Well, you could not have been more right about your recommendation of S/Y Campai, Captain Barney (sorry, everyone loved his first name and so his last name was lost at sea), Chef Diane and Stewardess Sophie. We had the time of our lives from beginning to end. From a flawless pickup and welcome in St. Thomas to our very busy five island tour, we were treated to the most wonderful meals, the kindest touches from creative, hand-folded different linens at every meal, beautiful stateroom turn downs every day, chilled expedition water bottles carefully placed in the cockpit and at the bedside every night and all kinds of fun from tubing to wakeboarding, snorkelling and kayaking. The touches and kindness of this crew are exceptional. Barney is not only a great and fun captain, his cheeky humour and warm demeanour made him part of our family. He made each of our four children laugh and volunteer many times, Captain Barney is hilarious and so nice and funwe love him. Among his many talents, he was a keen wheelman on the speed dingy where he gave A+ tube rides to three boys who could not wipe the grins off their faces.
Chef Diane is simply a lovely person and, in our estimation, an extremely talented chef. She created the most beautiful meals and surprises serving them with style and a keen focus on our family tastes all thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented. The gathering and feast at Campais dinning cockpit was a three-time-a-day luxury treat that put our family of six near heaven and with smiles abound. The meals were simply fantastic and presented with a sweet spirit that always made you feel extra special and privileged. Lovely Sophie would set a beautiful table with the most ornate folded linens and varied place settings that anyone could dream up. She also became an important fixture at cocktail hour with her fantastic handmade drinks. Captain Barney was also the best matred appearing precisely at the right times to offer more wine or drinks and some light hearted commentary that made everyone laugh. With his keen technology background and organized way, family movie night was not only punctuated by an exceptionally organized movie library and presented on a nice big screen in her beautiful salon with great surround sound, but Barney had great recommendations that were a hit with the family. All of Campais crew were quietly attentive and outright friendly and enthusiastic and interesting to talk to as well.
We went on fun expeditions with Barney and a particularly touching and memorable treasure hunt that somehow found a beautifully colored treasure map in a bottle on Jost Van Dyke which led us to Norman Island (Treasure Island) where after an amazing snorkel through caves, our 8 year old discovered the buried treasure box high above the cave water wrapped in rope and linen. The adventure lasted through two days of anticipation and culminated in a Campai cigar box filled with Gummi Bears and Hersheys Kisses that also magically never were exhausted (on account of evening angels who magically saw to it that the box was filled to the brim as soon as it was depleted). You should have seen the face on 8 year old Conrad who scratched his head as he told Captain Barney about how he had eaten so much candy that he could see the bottom of the box but somehow each day it was filled to the brim again). This was a priceless memory to say the least and executed flawlessly with no prompting. It was the happy, thoughtful and creative initiative of a great crew.
As an experienced yachtsman, I can honestly S/Y Campai is a great yacht and her quality build and design by renowned naval architect Ron Holland was apparent. She cuts a striking line on the water, is a high volume yacht but fairly speedy cruiser and very sound under full sail. She has a very nice sea ride that was especially appreciated by an 8 year old known for getting seasick. She has been well maintained and what shows of her age disappears quickly underway and the longer you spend time on her. But above all, its the crew that makes the difference. My wife and I said many times that we were splendidly happy with our choice of this crew first and the yacht second and each of our four children would second that sentiment.
In the end, the true test of a recommendation is whether one would charter again with this crew or on this yacht. The answer is an emphatic, YES! We would go out of our way to be with Barney, Diane and Sophie again and can unreservedly recommend them and S/Y Campai to your clients. We would follow this crew to almost any yacht. Please feel free to post this recommendation on your website. Barney, Diane and Sophie have earned it and S/Y Campai deserves it.
All the best at the end of a family dream trip. Family Patriarch
