Meet the Crew

David Green

Captain Dave isn't your stereotypical charter captain. A native Texan and West Point graduate, Captain Dave spent 10 years commanding M1 tank units all over the world and 25 years in the IT industry. Although his maritime interests were stimulated at West Point, where he became an accomplished scuba diver, it would be many years before attaining his U.S. Coast Guard 100 Ton Master Mariner with Sailing Endorsement license.

Now, an avid sailor, Dave, is captain of the Pentagon Sailing Club's Racing Squadron (2016-2017), racing in as many as 180 events since 2010. Sailing and racing along the Potomac, adjacent to the nation's capital, was a constantly exciting challenge due to random shallows and tour boats competing for the narrow channel. Every race was worthwhile, enjoying the capital's beautiful scenery, historical landmarks always in sight, and the wonderful camaraderie of his racing pals.

When he's not racing, he sails recreationally as often as possible in the Virgin Islands. In contrast to sailing near D.C., the Virgin Islands offer such exotic, stunning landscapes that Dave is exhilarated to share with his guests. Captain Dave is most at home behind the helm of Nana, when his guests are relaxing, and ultimately having fun. Come soak in the good times sailing with Captain Dave!

Chef and first mate, Janice always dreamed of being a mermaid..an now onboard Nana she gets the chance to be one! She spent a great deal of her childhood on Oak Island, NC where her family had a cottage. As a child she took part in sailing lessons, swimming on a team for several years, lifeguarding at her community pool and anything else that kept her in the water...read more

While attending North Carolina State University, Janice met her husband and college sweetheart, David Walters. They married shortly after and had two incredible children, Steven and Jessica, who became their world. The kids were practically raised on the water with the family spending almost every weekend and available weekdays entertaining friends and family on their boat.

Janice’s cooking was influenced growing up on the NC beaches. Steeped in the tradition of southern seafood recipes from Southport and Oak Island as well as “handed down” recipes from mom and grandmother, Janice’s cuisine is infused with the freshest of Caribbean fare.

Janice is eager to help guests experience their own personal daily adventures whether it is a great island hike to some of the ruins and mountain top vistas, a special snorkel or that favorite local hidden beach bar. Some of her fondest memories were that first sail to Anegada with her husband, the jeep ride to remote Cow Wreck Beach, and a beautiful anniversary walk down a 7-mile beach. These little and big moments she will always hold in her heart in memory of her husband. She strives to make sure guests see more of these Caribbean treasures than ever and will not be satisfied until they discover their own magical moments!

Janice also holds her USCG Captain’s 100 Ton Masters license, STCW95 and Red Cross/ CPR certifications.

Incredible sailing adventure with Captain Dave Green - Five Stars!!
What a perfect trip. We spent five fabulous days sailing around the BVI hitting a different venue and adventure every day. The sunsets and sunrises were absolutely stunning! The best part of the day was waking up underway every morning to the smell of breakfast cooking! The boat was amazing with plenty of room to spread out something to do for everyone. You could relax on the sundeck, read a book in the cabin, participate in water sports or take the dingy ashore for an off boat adventure.

Captain Dave's local knowledge of the BVI's is what made the trip great. He knew all the popular spots to visit to ensure we got the full experience! He helped with reservations at the amazing Coco Maya restaurant on Virgin Gorda. So, whether it was diving, snorkeling, paddle boarding, eating, drinking or just relaxing in the sun Dave had it covered.

Next time we are lucky enough to sail the BVI's I can guarantee Captain Dave will be at the helm.

Best Sailing Vacation Ever!
What a fantastic, memorable week we had sailing with Captain Dave! Everything about this trip was perfect. The boat was spacious and comfortable and Dave’s knowledge of the area provided us with a fascinating variety of places to go and things to do each day. Dave was a wonderful host, safety conscious, relaxed and fun to be around, always willing to answer questions about sailing and the areas we visited. Hands down, the best sailing vacation I have ever been on. Dave will be our first choice next time we visit the British Virgin Islands!

Reviews for Nana with previous crew:

Matt & Tara couldn’t have been more friendly and welcoming!

Nana was a great boat, very comfortable for our group. Outdoor space was the best part of the boat.

The food was fantastic. Presentation was superb. Preferences were well customized, thanks Tara!

We tweaked the itinerary as we went along and found the best snorkeling and places to stay.

Sailing Directions were very organized and great to deal with. Information on the website was great. We would certainly recommend your services to others.

The crew were great!! Nana is comfortable and we enjoyed eating at the outside table for meals. Food was amazing! Tara did a wonderful job customized to our preferences.

You were very helpful and made it easier for us to book this trip.

Suzanne S, aboard Catamaran Nana sailing the Virgin Islands

Matt and Tara were exceptional. Friendly, helpful and a pleasure. They knew when to "fade into the background" but also were very engaged with our group. We have been numerous times to the BVI but they brought us to some wonderful snorkeling sites we had not seen before.

The boat was very clean absolutely no complaints there. Very nice boat, good spaces.

The food was AMAZING! If you like good food, go on this charter! Menu was well customized, some of us had food allergies, and Tara made some separate custom meals as good as the rest. Everything from scratch. Only problem is the few pounds we each gained for the week - well worth it. Matt is a terrific drink mixer.

Very good itinerary--and they were willing to go to the places we also wanted to see.

Sailing Directions' service was problem free and appreciated. Would recommend Sailing Directions, The Nana, and Matt and Tara without reservation.
